For using the Netgear Genie smart setup wizard, it is required that your router should have the compatibility with Genie smart setup wizard or it should have the Netgear Genie application embedded in it.

Updating the firmware of the Netgear wireless router through the Netgear Genie smart wizard becomes much easier. The Genie smart wizard is a very interactive user interface for the router setup as well as a firmware update. You can perform several tasks through this desktop application.
- Open the browser and enter the web address www.routerlogin.net in the address bar and enter.
- Authenticate the login to the browser with the username and the password you have set or if you are logging in to the router for the first time, then you can enter the default credentials that are “admin” and “password” respectively.
- The Netgear Genie web page will pop out automatically from where you can update the firmware of the router.
- Click on the tools tab and then click on the firmware update tab.
- Assuming that you have already downloaded the firmware update file from the Netgear downloads section, click on the “browse” tab and you will be prompted to locate and open the update file from your PC.
- Select and open the downloaded update file and click the upload tab in the bottom of the setup page of the Netgear Genie smart wizard.
- Once you have clicked the upload tab, the update installation process will get started automatically and the upload will get finished within a minute or two.
Note- It is of much importance to note that the firmware update process shouldn’t be interrupted in any case as it can cause the router to malfunction and the router can get damaged forever also.
Points to remember
Use the wired (Ethernet connection) connection instead of the wireless connection as the wired connection is much reliable comparatively.
You may need to configure the router again after the firmware update because the data on the router gets erased often during the firmware update.
Do not remove the power supply adapter n between the whole updating process.
The graphical user interface can get more interactive after the update is done.

The Netgear firmware update can also be updated through one another method i.e. the check button.
Follow the step by step instructions to update the firmware of the router successfully.
- Connect your modem to the internet port of the router with an Ethernet cable.
- Again connect the computing device to the LAN port of the router with the help of another LAN cable (Ethernet RJ45).
- Now, switch on the power supply of the router and wait till the lights on the display panel get stable.
- Enter the web address www.routerlogin.net or the default IP address of the router i.e. 192.168.1.1 / 192.168.0.1 in the address bar of the browser.
- Authenticate the access to the setup page with a login username and password.
- Click the Advanced Setup and then click the firmware upgrade button.
- Click the Check button. This Check button can also be flashing on the top right of the Netgear page.
- On clicking the check button, the Netgear window will show promptly you to download the update if it has released any.
- Follow the rest of the instructions on the screen to successfully update the firmware of the router.
- Click the Upload tab at the end and the upload process will start and you will have to wait for few minutes till the whole process is done.
The Netgear firmware update usually takes 2 to 3 three minutes of time. It is recommended that the power supply of the router and modem shouldn’t be interrupted at any stage of uploading as it can lead to the corruption of router firmware.
